these are merely my practicing inking and 'spotting black areas'... just for fun...

funeral sequence drawings
i liked working on this sequence... a version had already been done by a very gifted artist, alessandro carloni, and he had used these b+w photographs of sky, so in trying to match the look of what he had done i borrowed his
idea for the sky in these... when i boarded my version i chose not to
show the boat until the first arrow landed, to give some mystery to the
scene, so the shot of gobber handing the bow and arrow to hiccup was
shot from their front... this changed in the final. but most of what i
did is intact

old sequence from dragon 1
these are drawings i just ran across from an early version of the first dragon movie. in this scene, gobber and stoick had an argument over how stoick was raising hiccup... it got pretty intense, but gobber stood his ground and got the point across... i always liked this sequence.

mashup
a bartender at a nice restaurant in nashville and i got into a conversation and he found out i worked on ren and stimpy. he was a huge fan of the show and i promised him i'd send him along a drawing later. i was thinking of what to draw for him and started sketching the characters again in sketchbook ( i haven't drawn them in ages) and this came out. i thought it was a fun mashup...

another airplane doodle
Today I was returning from another trip to nashville where I spent the week putting together the first cut of the veggie tales episode I am working on... this drawing kept me busy for a good chunk of the flight...I am trying to practice the technique of 'spotting blacks', which is to say designing the black areas of an inked drawing. I am not terribly good at it, all my heroes are awesome at it, and I have decided to try and figure out this skill. It may take some time...

plane doodles
so i recently bought the samsung galaxy note 8 to use with sketchbook pro, and i have to say it's been the best spent money in ages. i actually do my boarding on it now, and save the layered files as psd's to finish in photoshop... on the plane ride to and from nashville last week i chewed through hours of what could have been boredom doodling... here's a few of them, all completely random subject matter
veggie tales stuff from 11 years ago
my wife and i lived in chicago from 2001 to 2003 working with big idea, who make the veggietales series . my wife was headhunted by them to produce their first feature film 'jonah'... i really liked working with those guys, and by a neat series of events i'm getting to work with them again! (dreamworks bought them last year, and since they know i used to work with them i got asked if i'd like to do so again, to which i eagerly said yes) so last week i was in nashville, where the are now, and one of my old friends had a ton of old storyboards from when i was there. it was fun to look through these old drawings, so i copied a few to post here...
